John Sybalsky
I was saddened to hear of John's death. What a tremendous loss. I attended Top Cats for awhile once I got through the C2 list, and then again after getting through the C3a list. John's evil sense of humor really appealed to me. John's peeps were used to doing "Heads Left Fan the Top" from day one. Not me. John called it that first night I was there. He didn't say anything, but he used it on subsequent weeks until I finally didn't hesitate. He had such a knack for spotting individual weaknesses. John's music could be wacky. The chicken song? Egads! Once a year it was fine. Actually, I did like dancing to most of John's music. My favorite was his Polish(?) version of Rasputin. My thoughts go out to his loved ones and all his many fans. : Rasputin | | Friday, May 22nd, 2009 | | 7:20 pm |
I needed some information from prior posts. Nothing to see here. Move along. | | Monday, April 20th, 2009 | | 6:34 am |
LJ Tip
Since convention, I've heard a couple grumblings about the lack of attendance at the LJ tip this year. I apologize for not posting about it ahead of time. The schedule wasn't posted with the specialty tips until Thursday or Friday, so I didn't even know if there would be one this year (or even a bear tip). Still, I should have posted once I found out. Guess there won't be one next year as it will combined with non-community online groups like facebook and myspace, etc. Thanks to everyone who attended, and special kudos to otterpop58 for getting it all started in the first place. | | Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 | | 7:37 am |
Convention goodness
My time at convention was so-so. Mostly Some personal stuff interfered, but there were some good things worth mentioning. I thought one of the best things about DCDC was the dance halls. Big rooms. Well air-conditioned. Plenty of water. For the most part, sound wasn't horrible. Dick seemed to be around a lot to take care of things. One can never get too much Dick. Edit: It was great to have the dance halls all near each other! We enjoyed our hotel room. We never encountered the maid, and the room was always cleaned before we returned. One of the toilets was running, and they fixed it promptly. Plenty of hangers in each of our closets. Plenty of dresser space. I did lose double_ohsteven once, but I was able to use one of the phones to locate him in the living room. Weather was nice. Much warmer than I saw predicted. The cool/cold mornings were refreshing. The geographical location was outstanding. Plenty of restaurants nearby that were open when needed. Metro was handy. Of course, it's always wonderful to see some people. Some people. Luckily, there are lots and lots of those good ones. | | Sunday, April 12th, 2009 | | 5:58 am |
Dancing at convention
I haven't danced too much this convention. I think I've yet to make it into the Plus hall. (I'll rectify that today.) I've only stuck my head into the C3/4 hall to watch for a bit. Some years the schedule can be overstimulating, and I've had a hard time picking between dance halls. Luckily, that hasn't been a problem at all this year, so things are a bit more leisurely. I danced a couple speciality tips yesterday morning. After checking the schedule, I napped after lunch. I danced some after dinner, and headed to the room about 10pm. I've mostly stuck to halls with callers I enjoy personally: Barry, Sandie, ewe_bull_akr, caller_dayle. I did dance some C2 to Lynette, and it was enjoyable. (Unlike C3b tape group, there was no voice-clashing music from India or any cause for Gamut to hide.) Today is fun badge tour, then brunch. Looks like I'll have a couple hours of Plus this afternoon, then an hour of C1 with Sandie before closing ceremonies. | | Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 | | 7:36 am |

Convention expectations
When I heard that convention would be in DC in 2009, I was excited. I imagined it would be my best convention yet. Good planners, good city. My expectations continue to drop, but maybe that's a good thing. The thing with pessimism is that you can be pleasantly surprised. Is it considered optimistic to hope for pleasant surprises? This should be the easiest year to pack: No mic, no choreo, no club uniforms, no extra days of GCA school. One wrinkle is transporting fluids. For Passover, I'm thinking about bringing blood to put above the hotel room doors. I'm really in the holiday mood this year! | | Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 | | 9:09 pm |
DCDC Thursday
I think Steve and I are doing the Tourmobile hop-on hop-off tour on Thursday. Anyone ever do this in DC? | | Monday, March 30th, 2009 | | 5:29 am |
Convention practice
I need some help practicing for convention. I've currently got 6 phantoms lined up to practice a moonshine tip. Need one more person for a square. A little help? | | Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 | | 6:42 am |
Parts is parts
Although I didn't dance on Sunday, I finally figured out that even though it sounds like a two-part call, this cannot be fractionalized: "Eleanor over there, Richard turn around." (Even if you repeat one part three times.) I hadn't been to MNS in months, and they were teaching the same call back then. | | Sunday, March 15th, 2009 | | 7:25 am |
Bears and Boxers
My favorite part of the convention is usually the bear tip. (This affection was sabotaged last year when someone chose Nick as one of the callers.) If there ends up being a bear tip this year, for me it's going to be a Bears and Boxers tip. I'm not sure why I never thought of that before. | | Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 | | 7:52 am |
C3a/C3b/C4 convention schedule
I can't view the DCDC convention schedule at work since I'm stuck with IE6 which isn't compatible with the site. I saw B. Klein's comment on the challenge e-list. Is it true that the convention scheduler this year made the same retarded mistake as last year? Does no one learn? | | Saturday, February 28th, 2009 | | 6:43 pm |
Slowing down the PACE
It's not like I'm ever going to dance at PACE in the South Bay, but today's email from PACE was a headscratcher. Nancy has booked Ken Ritucci for August. He doesn't call above C2. WTF? Why the hell would you book a caller who can't even call the level? | | Sunday, January 18th, 2009 | | 8:40 pm |
Obama squares up
While bigjohnsf is out of the country, he's left Barack to solicit dancers for Midnight Squares: "What's required is ... an appeal not to our easy instincts, but to our better angels," Obama told the crowd assembled outside Baltimore's City Hall. | | Saturday, January 10th, 2009 | | 8:18 am |
PACE has been moved today
I just got a phone call from Jim Jones. The PACE dance scheduled today in Pleasant Hill has been moved to Cook's Barn. The dance hall double-booked the space. I've sent an email to the Midnight Squares list. I have no idea where exactly Cook's Barn is (and I really don't care). Sacramento? Somewhere far. | | Friday, January 9th, 2009 | | 11:02 am |

Trip to DC booked
I guess I'm going to convention. I was able to purchase tickets on American today from SFO to DCA for $99 each way, plus fees ($240 total, plus baggage costs). One stop at DFW, but to fly into DCA, I'll take it. | | Monday, September 22nd, 2008 | | 10:21 pm |
Break time
I haven't been my fun self lately while square dancing, so I'm gonna take a little break. I'm dealing with some other personal issues. Hopefully, I'll take care of those things soon and return to dancing with lots of smiles and much laughing. |
